King’s Ely is a coeducational independent day and boarding school of over 1000 pupils in the beautiful cathedral city of Ely, Cambridgeshire. It was founded in 970 A.D., making it one of the oldest schools in the world. Today King’s Ely is a modern school with all of the facilities that you would expect of a successful school. King’s Ely has always been closely linked with the great Cathedral of Ely. Several medieval monastic buildings are still in use by the school, including the splendid monastic barn, now the dining hall.
This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced development professional to join a leading independent school and, using the building blocks already in place, to create, develop and run an imaginative and exciting development programme. The School had a development function in the past, but it has not been active for some years; thus, the donor potential of King’s Ely is considerable, but remains largely untapped. A recent significant gift helped the School to purchase the Old Bishop’s Palace, which will now mean that the administrative offices and Sixth Form can be relocated.
The Director will design the function along the lines of ‘best practice’, putting a strategy in place that will include a future capital campaign for improved sports facilities. He/she will manage all fundraising initiatives that are appropriate to the ethos and history of the school, establishing a lively and credible function that has the respect of the whole School community. Reporting to the Director will be the Secretary of the Old Eleans Club, and an Administrative Database Assistant (as yet to be appointed). The Director will be a member of the senior management team and report to the Head and Chief Executive, Mrs Sue Freestone who is now in her eighth year as Head. Remuneration will be highly competitive within the sector, and the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate gravitas, creativity, diplomacy, self-motivation, energy and organisational ability.
